Things Are Out of Control Prayer

Dear God my maker and helper,

I come to you today in need of great help because of things are out of control in my life.  I claim the promises you give me in your word in Psalm 146 for today, tomorrow and forever.

As the Psalm says: Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

Whose hope is in the Lord his God,

I thank you that you are my God who helps me when I feel I can’t go on, the God who sends me helpers here on earth to counsel me, comfort me and be here with me.  Although my situation feels hopeless and things are out of control, I will put my hope in you and not in people or circumstances here on earth.

As the Psalm says you are The Maker of heaven and earth, The sea, and everything in them –

The Lord, who remains faithful forever.

I am comforted by the fact that you are the creator of all things because that means that you are able to create a new life for me now that my old one has been destroyed.   I cling desperately to your faithfulness as I journey on a broken path created by unfaithful people and their unfair actions.

As the Psalm says    He upholds the cause of the oppressed

And gives food to the hungry

I depend on you to uphold my cause when no one else can.  You know how oppressed I feel by my circumstances, my grief and my pain.  Please nourish my fainting heart.  Help me to embrace all of your provisions, big and small, because I am so hungry for an end to my suffering.

As the Psalm says, The Lord sets prisoners free,

The Lord gives sight to the blind,

I feel like I’m imprisoned by my circumstances and everywhere I turn there’s a roadblock.  I long for the day when I will be set free and able to move forward with a new and spacious life.  I feel like I have been blind to so many things.  I ask you to help me to truly see and understand.  Help me to see clearly the deceptions that have imprisoned me and help me to act on the truth that you reveal.

As the Plam says, The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,

The Lord loves the righteous.

Lord, I feel weighed down by my troubles.  I am depressed, angry, confused and fearful.  I find it hard to love myself sometimes when I think of the mistakes I’ve made.  And yet you say you love me.  You call me righteous not because I’m always right but because I trust in Christ, who died to forgive my sins so I might live a new life of grace and strength.

As the Psalm says, The Lord watches over the alien

And sustains the fatherless and the widow

It’s strange how these days I feel like a stranger in my own home and in my own life because things are so out of control.  Thank you for watching over me when I feel like I’m lost in a nightmare and can’t wake up.  I feel so alone, so far away from those who love and care for me, those who nurture me.  There have been deaths in my relationships with those who should have been there for me, those who made promises they didn’t keep and spoke words they didn’t mean.  Remind me that you know my loneliness and you are sending your angels both seen and unseen to sustain me day by day.

As the Psalm says, But he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

I pray that you will protect me from those who are opposing me and ruining my life.  I pray that all of their attacks on me will end in frustration and that they will not be successful in their evil ways.

As the Psalm says, The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations.

Praise the Lord.

I end by thanking you that you reign, not just today, but always.  I thank you that your faithfulness has been proven by past generations and will be enjoyed for generations to come.  I thank you and praise you for your unending love and care for me.

Amen.

Psalm 146:5-10 NIV

About this prayer: The day I was praying about things that are out of control.

I wrote this prayer when I was trying to pray for a friend’s daughter when things were out of control in her life because of a traumatic divorce involving betrayals, lies and accusations.  I was reading in the Bible and came across Psalm 146 verse 9 where it says, “but he (God) frustrates the ways of the wicked.”  The verse seemed to jump off the page because it said exactly what I felt like saying.

As I meditated on the Bible verse, I realized that this verse was a statement about God’s ability and character.  God has both the power and the desire to frustrate the plans of the wicked!

I went back and re-read Psalm, pausing after each verse to express how it applied to my friend’s daughter and to all of us when our lives are out of control.

After I wrote the prayer I sent it to my friend and she emailed back that she was so relieved to know that it’s OK to ask God to frustrate evil plans.  She said that she had forwarded the prayer to her daughter and she loved the prayer.
