About this prayer for co-workers who are hard to get along with
After writing this prayer I became very aware of the mental and spiritual battles that we face when dealing with difficult co-workers. Frequent prayer is badly needed because your emotional reserves and coping skills are being used up during the hours you spend in the workplace.
When I made up a list of reasons we might have difficulty with relationships with co-workers, the list was long and daunting. Here are a few things that might make co-workers hard to get along with: gossiping, envy, not pulling their share of the work load, abrasive personality, nosey, talkative, emotionally needy, constantly interrupting and not respecting your time, unpredictable behavior, quick temper, prejudice (against your age, race, nationality, religion), bitter, sarcastic, untruthful, personality clashes, dishonesty including petty theft and misusing company time or resources, inexperience and incompetence, annoying habits, resentful, mistrustful, defensive, being a know-it-all, prideful, boastful, being a poor listener, unwilling to change and lack of communication skills.
This list shows why we need divine help! The Bible gives us this overall advice on co-workers who are hard to get along with:
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, lie at peace with everyone…’If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. “ (Romans 12:14-18,20,21 NIV)
